Processed foods Myths
A while ago on our Facebook page we talked about intake of processed foods now we wish to elaborate more on processed foods.
We have been told to stay away from processed foods/convinence foods and take more of fresh foods, but we are not told also that, not all fresh foods are to be eaten raw.
According to the Oxford dictionary, processing is to perform a series of mechanical or chemical operations on (something) in order to change or preserve it.
Meaning boiling of your foods is also a processing operation as well as drying, grinding and smoking.
Convinence foods are your fresh foods that under go chemical or mechanical operations to make it safe for consumption, incorporate lost nutrients and also added nutrients not present,Increase shelf life of food and promote food security.
Processed grains beverages, are carefully researched methods that improve overall acceptance of foods.
A chef cooks foods in different ways(creative cooking) and while in the process, some nutrients can be lost in food as well as some anti nutrients removed which is beneficial, enzymes can be activated also that are good for human health, but lost nutrients usually go with an accompliment to restore back those nutrients to the dish. So is processed and packaged foods, they are also fortified to improve nutritive value.
Chemical processing method in yoghurt using fermentation brings about growth of bacteria and breaks down lactose to lactic acid and releases the enzyme lactase. This fermentation process has proven to Prevent cancer and ulcer, improve brain health, improve GUT life, Promote good heart health and lowers risk of diabetes.
Processed foods are not bad,a good knowledge on Nutrition will help moderate and improve where lacking in your diet and reduce excessive intake of foods causing damage to you.
Convince and processed food are created to make cooking easier .
Fresh foods dried, fermented or grinded are actually great and create an avenue for creative dishes.
The method of processing food has been proven to be what cause loss of nutrient.
Example: washing of green Water leaf which causes loss of phyto nutrients good for human health.
And in cases like Almond seeds a proven research has showing hbbthat soaking of almond seeds overnight (6-8hours) removes an antiniutrient (Tanin) found and the shell(back) of the seed and improves it's taste bringing a buttery taste and are enjoyed by little kids.
Tanin limits the absorption of nutrients like Calcium and iron by the body.
processed foods only become bad by the way they are consumed. A diabetic patient should have very minimal intake of processed foods especially high fatty foods like cakes,muffins, processed oil,Red meat, Coconut oils, Artificial additives, excessive fried foods, because of its high calorie intake.
